PS Reservoir Hose Brittle
The most common power steering leak on the SC430. The rubber hose under the PS reservoir hardens with age and the spring clamp can no longer create a seal.
Symptoms
- Power steering fluid visible under the car or on engine components near the PS reservoir
- Fluid level dropping in PS reservoir
- May notice slight steering heaviness if fluid gets low enough
- Wet/oily residue around the base of the PS reservoir
Cause
The rubber reservoir hose loses elasticity over time due to heat cycling and age. The original spring clamp relies on hose flexibility to maintain seal pressure. Once the rubber goes hard and plastic-like, the clamp can’t compress it enough to seal [Probable — multiple forum reports, ~90% of PS leak cases].
There are two hoses under the reservoir [Probable]:

Diagnosis
- Clean the area around the PS reservoir
- Run the engine and turn the steering lock-to-lock a few times
- Inspect underneath the reservoir for fresh fluid seepage
- Check both hose connections at the reservoir nipples
- Distinguish from PS High Pressure Hose Crack which leaks further down the system (near pump or rack)
