Radiator Plastic Tank Crack

The plastic top tank of the SC430 radiator separates from the aluminium core at the crimped joint. This is the primary radiator failure mode on the SC430.

Symptoms

  • Pink or green coolant visible around the top of the radiator
  • Coolant level dropping
  • Overheating in traffic or under load
  • Steam from engine bay in severe cases
  • May see dried coolant residue caked on the radiator or surrounding components (from slow leak over time)

Cause

The radiator is a plastic/aluminium construction. The plastic top tank is crimped onto the aluminium core with a rubber gasket. Heat cycling over years causes the plastic to become brittle and the gasket to deteriorate. The joint fails, usually “just under the top radiator hose neck, where the plastic top of the radiator meets the aluminum core” [Probable — ClubLexus].

Diagnosis

  • Pressure test the cooling system
  • Inspect the top of the radiator where plastic meets aluminium — look for pink/green residue or active weeping

Fix

Replace the whole radiator. Do not attempt to repair the plastic/aluminium joint.

Notes:

  • Replacement radiators don’t include factory foam sealing/padding. Owners have used self-adhesive tape or reused old foam. Testing showed removing the foam made no difference to temperature performance [Reported — single owner test].
