Caster Arm Bushing Degradation
The most common front suspension failure on the SC430. The rubber bushings in the lower control arm #2 (caster arm) soften and deform with age and heat cycling [Probable].
Symptoms
- Bump steer — the car twitches or pulls when hitting bumps [Probable]
- Wandering at highway speed — vague, imprecise straight-line tracking [Probable]
- Clunking on braking or acceleration — fore-aft movement in the suspension under load changes [Probable]
- Can’t hold alignment — shop sets alignment, it drifts out within weeks [Probable]
- Uneven tyre wear — accelerated inside-edge wear (can compound with Factory Camber Tyre Wear)
Cause
The caster arm (lower control arm #2) positions the wheel hub fore-aft and sets the caster angle. Factory caster is approximately +6.85 to +7.00 degrees and is not adjustable [Probable]. The rubber bushings at each end of the arm soften and deform over time, allowing the arm to move under load. This changes the caster angle dynamically and introduces slop into the steering geometry [Probable].
Diagnosis
- Check struts first. Blown front struts produce very similar symptoms — wandering, poor ride, vague steering. If the struts are leaking or have 100K+ km, replace those first before chasing control arm bushings [Probable].
- Visual inspection — look for cracked, bulging, or collapsed rubber in the caster arm bushings. Comparison between sides can reveal uneven wear.
- Jack test — with the front wheels off the ground, grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock and check for play. Excessive movement may indicate bushing wear (or ball joint wear — see Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Wear).
- Alignment history — if the shop keeps needing to re-align and the numbers won’t hold, degraded bushings are the likely culprit.
What to tell the mechanic: “I’m getting bump steer and wandering. I want the caster arm bushings checked for play, but I’d like the struts inspected first to rule them out.”

Option 1: Replace bushings only (caster arm stays on car)
