Front Suspension
Double-wishbone independent front suspension on the SC430 (UZZ40). Shared platform geometry with the GS300/GS400/GS430 S160 (drivetrain and suspension — body, electrical, and convertible systems differ) [Probable].
Key components
-
Upper control arm (UCA) — single arm with integrated ball joint. Ball joint is NOT separately replaceable — if the joint wears, the entire UCA assembly must be replaced [Verified]. See Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Wear.
- Right: OEM 48610-39085 Front Upper Control Arm Right
- Left: OEM 48630-39055 Front Upper Control Arm Left
-
Lower control arm #1 (main lateral arm) — primary lateral arm providing camber control and lateral wheel location. Has a separate replaceable lower ball joint.
- Right: OEM 48068-30300 Front Lower Arm Right
- Left: OEM 48069-30300 Front Lower Arm Left
-
Lower ball joint — separate replaceable component connecting lower arm #1 to the steering knuckle.
- Right: OEM 43330-39535 Front Lower Ball Joint Right
- Left: OEM 43340-39415 Front Lower Ball Joint Left
-
Lower control arm #2 / “caster arm” — fore-aft arm that sets caster angle. Caster is NOT adjustable from factory; specified at approximately +6.85 to +7.00 degrees [Probable]. Rubber bushings in this arm are the most common front suspension failure point.
- Right: OEM 48660-24020 Caster Arm Right
- Left: OEM 48670-24020 Caster Arm Left
-
Front struts — MacPherson-type shock absorbers. Important to check before blaming control arm bushings — blown struts masquerade as control arm issues [Probable].
Factory alignment specs
Factory camber is approximately -1.5 degrees, which causes accelerated inside-edge tyre wear. This is a widely reported complaint. See Factory Camber Tyre Wear.
Common failure pattern
The SC430 front suspension has a predictable age-related failure sequence [Probable]:
- Caster arm bushings go first — typically 80,000–100,000 miles (128,000–161,000 km), though reported as early as 45,000 miles (72,000 km). See Caster Arm Bushing Degradation.
- Upper control arm ball joints — fail later than caster arm bushings. See Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Wear.
- Lower ball joints — wear but are individually replaceable.
Known faults
- Caster Arm Bushing Degradation — most common front suspension failure
- Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Wear — requires full UCA replacement
- Factory Camber Tyre Wear — factory camber spec causes accelerated inside-edge wear
Cross-application note
The front suspension geometry is shared with the Lexus GS300/GS400/GS430 (S160 platform). Many parts cross-reference and GS forum threads are relevant for suspension work. However, body, electrical, and convertible-top systems are completely different. [Probable]
